FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 15, 2007 – Sacramento, CA. “This is as close to being a tradition as an event can get,” says Raul Bernaldez, marketing manager for the Sinag-tala Theatrical Revue, which will be marshalling in the holiday season for an eighteenth consecutive year with an entertaining and eye-opening two hours of Filipino music, dance, literary vignettes and cultural traditions. The theater production, to be staged again by veteran award-winning artistic director Sonny Alforque, takes center stage at the Luther Burbank High School Auditorium, 3500 Florin Road, Sacramento
on November 30, December 1 and December 2. The Sacramento News and Review has described the Tagalog word Sinag-tala, a reference to the radiance of a star, as “fitting” for the popular annual show.
Some 100 Sinag-tala actors, dancers, singers and musicians of all ages will perform a meticulously assembled repertoire with at times whimsical and other times sobering themes such as the Chinese influences on Philippine history and culture, the exotic wonders of the coconut, social conditions in the Philippines, traditional celebrations, the comical songs of songwriter Yoyoy Villame, overseas workers and the joys of Christmas.
As usual, this year’s repertoire combines traditional fare, such as ethnic dances and rondalla music, with modern and western elements such as pop, jazz, heavy metal, rap and hip-hop. The program will feature engaging contrasts between children’s and adult selections, indigenous and western textures, and English and Philippine languages.
The production, officially entitled Sinag-tala 2007: A Theatrical Revue, is a Sinag-tala Filipino Theater and Performing Arts Association production. The show caps the SFTPAA’s annual theater and performing arts training program, recognized for its novel emphasis on the study and interpretation of works by Filipino artists. This training is offered for free to all community members ranging from pre-school children to seniors who are interested in either the artistic or business aspects of theater production. The training lasts at least twelve weeks during the months of September, October and November and consists of workshops and rehearsals led by master artists at the SFTPAA studio at 8275 Florin Road, Sacramento.
The ticket prices and show times for Sinag-tala 2007: A Theatrical Revue vary. General Admission is $15 on November 30 (7:30PM) and December 2 (2:30PM). General admission is $20 on December 1 (Gala Night—7:30PM). The ticket price for children under 12, students, and seniors for any of the three performances is $10.
